Little horrors

They came, they screamed, they played games, they gorged on sticky sweets.
Halloween was a big big success again this year (I just thank goodness it wasn't me who agreed to have 16 hyped up children in my house . . . )

. . . and obviously, no Halloween party is complete without a huge pot of spicy pumpkin soup. Nom. Nom. Nom.

How to take photographs of your children

>> Thursday, 28 October 2010

Today I am revealing all.
I am sharing my secrets, giving away my tips crafted over nearly 8 years of taking photos of my children.

Believe me I am no expert, but you pick up things, learn tricks, make mistakes and I want to share my experiences with you.

Of course there are ways to manipulate your photos using online software and fancy pants tools.
This isn't that post.
This is a basic how to take them post. This is a how to get THAT killer smile, how to make your children actually want you to photograph them, how to get pictures that make you sit back and sigh 'I took that. I TOOK THAT!'
Like I said, I am in no way shape or form and expert. I am a mum with years of experience. And I'd like to share that experience with you.

So visit Cosmicgirlie's Photoblog and read 8 Tips for Taking Photos of Children.
Of course these tips don't just apply to children, they can be used for taking any photos of people.

Will look forward to seeing some of your experiments in future Gallery posts!

People are Awesome

>> Wednesday, 27 October 2010

Seriously seriously awesome.
The children and I have watched this video over and over and over and over.
And every single time it gets a 'woah'.
We sit watching it with our mouths open. Agog (love that word!)
I'm sure some of them are fake (walking on water?) but even so . . .
Enjoy x

Mother to 15 boys

Sometimes I moan about it, sometimes I rant and GRRRR and roll my eyes, but actually, I love it when it's my turn to wash my son's rugby team kit.
Little shirts drying in the autumn sunshine: All those hopes and dreams embedded in the fibres, fluttering in the breeze.
Those clean little shirts all folded up neatly, ready for the next battle of wills.
And once again they will run run run through mud and rain and opponent. Battling away together on the pitch; fierce friends off it.
Long may his love of sport continue!

The Gallery: Week 33

>> Friday, 22 October 2010

Hello and welcome to week 33 of The Gallery.

Today I want you to have a right ole laugh on me.
Let's lighten up the internet and give it a right giggle. Tickle its funnybone and all that.
This week's theme is: Show me the Funny.

You know those photos that just make you chuckle (love that word) for no reason? An expression, a moment, a picture of your other half in an Abba wig . . . *ahem*
Show me your funny photos.

You've got 2 weeks to think about it too as I'm having a week off for half term to run around with the kids screaming and play wrestling and play mums and naughty children who need to be spanked. Or something.
So the link will go up on Wednesday, November 3.
Also, there will, oh yes, be a prize too . . .

Talking of prizes I can now reveal the two winners of the Favourite Photo Gallery, both of whom get an original piece of artwork from the online art store Art Under a Monkey.

I asked the gorgeous and every so slightly mad Spudballo to judge (as she won a previous Gallery competition).
She took her role extremely seriously. Christened herself Judge Spud and everything.
And then she sent me an email with her winners and an explanation as to how she went about judging them after reading and commenting on all 90 entries. ALL 90 ENTRIES!
I think it deserves repeating here.
Over to you Judge Spud:

"I found it so hard. Everyone's story/photo was moving in some way, they were all precious moments. Many of them joyous, many very very painful. But all moments in time and it was a wonderful, if exhausting, process. What was so interesting was how many of the photos were 'just snaps', but it didn't detract from the post at all. It's such a wake up call to people like me who have forgotten the power of recording the 'everyday', and how much those shots will mean to our children in years to come."

And if that doesn't inspire you to snap on, then nothing will!

So, without further ado, onto the winners:
They are: Cassandra for her quite moving tale of Italy and Emma for her moving tale of family.
Well done ladies. Gorgeous entries.

Don't forget to come back on Wednesday, November 3 to add your link for this week's prompt.
And obviously, visit as many others as you can, say hi, discover new people, welcome them in when they discover you.
Appreciate the wonderful words and photos that are opening themselves up to you.
The link stays open until the following Tuesday, so don't worry if you don't manage to post on Wednesday.

If you're new here and want to find out what The Gallery is all about visit here.
And if you want to make sure you don't miss any prompts or entries in future, make sure you subscribe to my RSS or email feed.

He's always right. Just like his mum . . .

>> Thursday, 21 October 2010

Hubby and I are rowing. Over something insanely trivial no doubt.
I'm not going to give any examples of what it might have been because, well, as I said they are insanely trivial and someone will point and laugh and say 'you daft pair, what are you 15?'
Yes we are daft. We've also been together for nearly 20 years so it clearly works for us.

Anyway, the incident here was so trivial that I can't recall right now what it was.
We're snipping away at each other when this little voice pipes up, filled with the authority of someone speaking from a position of knowledge:
"Stop rowing you two. What's the point? You're both right and you're both wrong, so you might as well stop it now."

And right there a 7 year old boy made his mum and dad feel about 2 inches tall . . .

Utterly gorgeous.

This post is for Week 32 of The Gallery: The Colour Red.

A ghost in the night

>> Monday, 18 October 2010

The first I know of his presence is a subtle shifting of the air.
I sense something is not quite right. My mothering radar flickers into action despite the fact that I'm fast asleep.

I open my eyes and I can just make out his little form in the dark; I can sense unease, discomfort, upset.
The digital clock tells me it's 3am.

He reaches out and touches my shoulder, not sure if I am awake or not.
I touch his hand. "What's the matter honey?"
"I've had a bad dream," he whispers with a catch in his voice. "I'm too afraid to be alone."

I shuffle over to the centre of the bed and pull back the edge of the duvet to invite him in.
"It's OK my lovely. Come in and I'll protect you."
He slips under the covers quietly, he doesn't want to wake his dad and incur his wrath. He makes such a fuss of getting his pillow just right and manoeuvring himself into a good sleeping position. Then he gropes for my hand and pulls it around his body so I'm hugging him as he sleeps.
"Night mum. Love you." He slurs his words slightly as though he's drifting back off to sleep already.

I struggle to return to the comfort of sleep.
It's cold here and I'm disturbed.
I listen to him breathe; listen for signs that his fear will return; that he'll need me again.
I lie there awakened by a 7 year old who's now taking up far too much room in my bed. But I lie there on my side as still as I can so as not to disturb him or encroach on the space he needs.

He's breathing heavily now. He's slipped back into a comforting sleep while I lie there just relieved that he's OK.
I feel like sleep will never come for me. I lie there between son and dad praying for sleep to come.
I watch the white digits on the clock. 3:10 . . .  3:11 . . . 3:12
Pleeeease let me sleep.
It must drop off at some point as the next thing I know I wake up to that beautiful little face looking at me, smiling, happy, content.
He's had a good sleep and the fear left him. I hide the fact that it totally floored me.

Sigh. Rough night. Even worse when you're not used to them and you've moved on from the waking in the night phase.
The whole of the following day I am affected by that disrupted night. I can't concentrate, I'm forgetful, I'm lethargic.
But do you know what? I wouldn't give those nights up for the world.
Cuddled up, mothering, watching over him, protecting.
If this is the only price I have to pay to feel that my grown up little man still needs me, then it's worth it.

In love with pink Meccano

>> Sunday, 17 October 2010

Of course the most important thing to ascertain after you've had granddad spend most of his Sunday afternoon building your pink Meccano motorbike is, what character is going to ride on it?

Cuddly bulldog with freaky bulging eyes? Hmm, he has to be squashed in to get in the 'cockpit' and he doesn't really fit in with the whole 'pink' theme going on . . .

Lazytown's Stephanie. Score! She's pink and her legs fit through the leghole bits.
But darn it, her legs won't bend to allow her to sit down and she looks odd just standing there . . .

A Micro Pet. Can't reach either the pedals or the handle bars and is, well, you know, a dog, but, it's a total winner and so takes pride of place on the bedside table in its new mean machine.

Meccano Pink 10 Model Box, £17.97
★★★★
The construction set for girls comes with all the tools and parts needed to make either a bike, a car or a helicopter. The sections are all big and bright and plastic and fairly easy to put together, but younger fingers may need quite a bit of help.
Mia loves it because, being pink, there is no way jose her big brother is going to try and steal it for himself.
(This set was provided via the Toys R Us Toyology scheme).

The Gallery: Week 32: Halloween special. With prizes

>> Friday, 15 October 2010

Hello and welcome to week 32 of The Gallery.

So in two weeks' time it's Halloween (yes, yes I know I've missed off the apostrophe, but it's more modern this way . . . )
We're just a little bit in love with the whole Halloween shebang in this house.
Pumpkin carving, dressing up, apple bobbing, running around screaming when trick or treaters ring the doorbell. Inappropriate fancy dress costumes. So high on sugar we can't sleep properly for the next week.
We do the lot.

So of course this week's theme needed to have a Halloween slant.
Horror? Good heavens no.
Things that go bump in the night? Too hard!
Someone on Twitter suggested 'fancy dress costumes'. Could you even imagine what we'd be letting ourselves in for?

So I've gone for something really easy and all inclusive.
This week's theme is: The Colour Red.

So bring out your little devils, your apple bobbers, your frightful fancy dress costumes (as long as they're red).
Or don't opt for the Halloween slant at all. It just needs to show 'red'.

And just to add to the fun I have two bumper packs of Snazaroo Halloween Face Paints to give to the people who make me laugh/cry/swoon the most!
The face paints and Special FX kit offer a fiendishly clever way to make your Halloween as ghoulish as possible, offering everything you need to create some truly horrifying creations!
Realistic wounds? Check
Gashed finger? Check
Zombie, vampires and demons? Check check check.
And if you're not the best at face painting you can even visit the Snazaroo site for step by step guides on how to create your monster.

I've got one of the sets here at home to try out: They're utterly fab and we're going to 'experiment' on daddy this weekend . . .

The Gallery will close early this week (on Sunday, October 24) so there is enough time to get the prizes out well in time for Halloween.

As always, come back on Wednesday to add your link, visit as many others as you can, say hi, discover new people, welcome them in when they discover you.

Fun with Barbie and BeyBlades

>> Thursday, 14 October 2010

As the mother of a boy, I've suffered Match Attax. Twice. I've gone through Crazy Bones, Bakugan, Pokemon and World Cup sticker phases.
I am currently stuck in a limbo featuring pretty much all of the above.
What is it about boys and collecting stuff?

Then this set pops through the door in our latest box of toys to review for Toys R Us. Ye gods, MORE things to collect.
I weep quietly in the corner and consider hiding them or giving them away or using the 'stadium' as a new plant pot for the garden.
But actually they are lots of fun.
BeyBlades: Stadium and Battle Tops, £9.99 and £7.99
★★★★★

Basically it's that age old game of duelling spinning tops (the collecting part of it is the tops for which you can buy different 'personalities' - I know, go on, roll your eyes) and you set them spinning off against each other in their giant, yellow plastic stadium.
And I am the champeen! Just sayin'.
I am a big fan of the original wooden toys, but I have to say we've had great fun with these. Still at £8 a top, we're probably sticking with the two we've got.

Barbie Fashion Fairtale Tansforming Doll, £21.99
★★★★★
She can change her glittering, meringue-esque dress into a, gasp, ballgown. Err that's it.
Oh no, hang on, you can also press her belt to have a 'fashion show tune' blasted out for her to sashay down the catwalk to.
You might be able to tell I'm not hugely impressed.
My 5 year old has suddenly discovered dolls and dressing them up and undressing them - seriously, why do girls feel the need to make EVERY doll in the house naked?
She has a whole gang of Disney princesses - Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Jasmin, Aladdin (seriously, she chose him too! Think it might have been the Abu the monkey toy that came with him that swung it).
But anyway, these dolls cost around £7 each.
So what do you get for your extra £15 with the Barbie Fashion queen? A transforming dress and an annoying sound effect?
I don't think so!

And be warned; she's a man stealer. Just look at her muscling in on Aladdin when Jasmin's back is turned.
Shocking.

The Gallery: Favourite Photo

>> Wednesday, 13 October 2010

So, totally impossible task eh?
Favourite photo? From the years and years of Polaroids, prints and digital pictures?
How the heck are you supposed to narrow it down to one? How?

This is the photo that sits on my bedside cabinet. It's the first thing I see when I go to bed and it's the first thing I see when I wake up.
It's not the best photo I have of my children but it represents them so well; sharing a bean bag together, smiling, all big brown eyes - and probably trying to kill each other 10 minutes after this was taken.

This post is for Week 31 of The Gallery: Favourite Photo.
It's in memory of the Favourite Photo Meme and the lovely online photo album of memories it produced.

And of course, there are the prizes . . .
My glamorous judge Spudballo will be checking over your entries and two winners will get to choose an original work of art from online gallery Art Under A Monkey.
The 12 pictures below are just a selection of the ones on offer to the winners. Check out their website to see full details of the art and check out the original post for details of the prize.

Also if anyone would like a a £25 gift voucher to spend on the site, I have 10 to give away (yes give away) to the first 10 people to ask for one.

If you're new and want to know what the Gallery is, go and read here, and then come right back and join in!

Whose responsibility is a child's behaviour in school?

>> Monday, 11 October 2010

My 5 year old had only been in school for around 3 weeks when I got The Call to see the Deputy Head because of her behaviour.
3 weeks!
Her older brother is all incredulous and 'WHAT DID YOU DO' with wide eyes and a smile on his face and is probably secretly jotting it down to use against her when they're being told off for something totally unrelated.
You see, he has never been to the Deputy Head's office to be reprimanded let alone had his mum called in for The Talk.

So I go in to see the DH in his office. His chair towers over mine and I'm sat there feeling like I'm right back in 1974 and I'm the 5 year old with my toes slightly turned in to face each other and a slight pink tinge creeping up my face.
He tells me that if a child is sent to the head twice in one week for bad behaviour the parent is called in.
Mia had been to see him twice in one DAY!

Now I totally support the fact that children need to be disciplined right from the get go. And Mia is a very feisty and strong willed young lady who needs reigning in now and again.
I mean WOAH reigning in.
And if I'm totally honest, I'm not the slightest bit surprised she's the first one to move onto the Deputy Head's radar.
BUT. One of the reasons she was sent there was for backchatting a dinner lady (come on, stop laughing). And I'm not very happy about it.

Mia was playing outside in the playground and wanted to come in to fill her water bottle.
She trots indoors only to be told she can't have any because she doesn't have the required arm band (seriously, this is news to me too) to be allowed inside.
She gets upset and a bit embarrassed I'm sure, and so is cheeky to the dinner lady who refused her entry.
And yes, while it's totally unacceptable for her to speak to anybody like that, I do question whether after just a few weeks at school she even knew about that rule?
There is so much for them to learn and take in during their first few months.
And, you know, she is only just 5.

Couldn't they have given her the benefit of the doubt, helped her get some water, then explained that next time there were rules she had to follow?
It just feels like they handled the situation badly and it escalated into something it needn't have.

And there was my little girl, sobbing her heart out in the DH's office because she had tried to fill her water bottle.
Of course, I just sat there an nodded like a fool and dutifully came home and told her that she cannot speak to people like that and how it's totally unacceptable.
But I feel a bit aggrieved for her.

I've had this post in draft for a while, but then I saw a whole raft of posts along similar lines:
Kellogsville talking about telling off other people's children, Mocha Beanie Mummy blogged about teaching our children manners and the lovely Julia's post about behaviour in school.

I guess I'm overreacting and it's all a learning curve for her.
Of course she's totally fine about it now and comes home with a proud as punch look on her face saying: "Mummy, mummy, I didn't go to Mr H's office today".

The Gallery: Week 31 - with prizes!

>> Friday, 8 October 2010

Hello and welcome to week 31 of The Gallery.

Firstly an apology to all those who ended up humming 'Here Come the Girls' all night after last week's theme!
But there were some great takes on the prompt in there, from friends and family to animals, mustachioed women and even an amazing and inspirational post about a blogger's boobs!

This week I'm asking you to delve into your photograph albums - be they dusty or digital.
This week's theme is: Your favourite photo. And why.

I ran a Favourite Photo Meme on this same subject back in January and it was HUGELY successful. I mean it spread further and wider than I could have ever imagined.
And I even pulled every single one of those photos (actually, that's a lie, I pulled together all the ones I knew about - 77 in total) into an online photo album that still gives me goosebumps when I look at it.

Take a look: You'll find many of your favourite bloggers in there and may even discover a few new ones. You may even see your photo in there!
And if you did join in before and it's STILL your favourite photo that's fine too, just reuse it.

But that's not all.
This week The Gallery is offering prizes.

Two lucky entrants will have one of these original pieces of art hanging on their wall courtesy of Art Under A Monkey (meaning art for under £500 - get it?!)
The 12 pictures here are just a selection of the ones on offer to the winners. Check out their website to see full details of the art.
The new online art gallery has a gorgeous range of original, contemporary art, some of it aimed at children. And for every piece of children's art sold, they make a donation to Kids Company (in fact even though they're donating two pieces of art for this competition, they have still committed to make the usual donation these would attract).
I LOVE this prize!
This is just a selection of the art available to win. I will send a picture of all 20 to the winners so they can choose their prizes.

I should also add that this prize is not necessarily for the best photo: I'm looking for photo and story here. Just do what you always do . . .
And your judge? The winner of The Gallery's last competition, the lovely Spudballoo who will pouring over your entries with her big beady eye . . .

Also if anyone would like a a £25 gift voucher to spend on the site, I have 10 to give away (yes give away) to the first 10 people to ask for one.

As always, come back on Wednesday to add your link, visit as many others as you can, say hi, discover new people, welcome them in when they discover you.
Appreciate the wonderful words and photos that are opening themselves up to you.

The Gallery: Here Come the Girls

>> Wednesday, 6 October 2010

Say hello to these gorgeous girls.
On a recent visit to my very lovely friend English Mum's home in Ireland, myself and four other ladies had to share our weekend with this bevy of beauties.

Hanging over the garden fence they 'MOOOOOed' all day long, peppering our weekend with their lovely bovine chorus.
Then English Mum told us why they were mooooing: They'd had their babies taken from them and they were calling for them.
Suddenly the sound of the countryside turned into the sound of heartbreak.
So I thought I would big them up here today. You'll be pleased to hear English Mum is taking care of them (she shouts words of support at them from her kitchen).

This post is for Week 30 of The Gallery: Here Come The Girls.

Apple and blackberry pie: The Great Big Autumn Bake Off

>> Tuesday, 5 October 2010

It has become something of an annual event in this house to bake an apple and blackberry pie as spring turns into autumn and we're looking for some warming comfort food to chow down on.
The apples come from the tree in our garden which was a wedding present from my very dear grandpa (who is no longer alive).
The blackberries are scrumped from local hedgerows - something my kids adore doing.

Last year's pie graces my Twitter page, but here is this year's. Glazed my my 5 year old's fair hands and eaten within, well, minutes.
I'm a big fan of 'big and chunky' so I never pre-cook the fruit and don't even add any sugar.
Just masses of fruit, shortcrust pastry hat on and cook.
Easy peasy lemon squeezey and one of my favourite family traditions.

Obviously these apples didn't make the cut. They got fed to the composter.

This is my entry for English Mum's Great Big Autumn Bake Off.
Go and join in (she even allows you to cheat if you're that way inclined . . . )

Giving our weekends over to sporting endeavours

>> Monday, 4 October 2010

Can you devote too much time to your children?
Can you reach a point where their lives impact on your lives and it crosses a line?

My 7 year old plays rugby on a Saturday morning and football on a Sunday morning.
He adores it.
The team spirit, the elation of a win, the team talk when they lose, being with friends, having his parents watch him do something he's good at.
Every weekend our house is a mad rush of organising: Up, breakfast, where's his boots, kit on, out the door, on the way to whatever match he has lined up.
Whatever the weather.
Sometimes we all go and make a family day out of it. Sometimes I take him on my own. Sometimes hubby takes him.
Sure it impacts on our weekends. We plan around it. He's missed probably only a handful of matches in the 2 years he's been playing.
It is a Permanent Fixture.

But here's the thing. Or my thing anyway.

While he's found something he adores I want to encourage and support him however I can.
If that means standing on the sidelines of a football pitch as a biting wind cuts through to my bones, then so be it.
If that means having to postpone a day out somewhere else until the afternoon until his rugby match is over, then so be it.

I stand there with my camera, cheering, encouraging, high fiving.
His face when he comes off that pitch is worth the few minutes stood in the biting cold.

In a few years time he may want to ditch it all and do nothing.
He may not want us around, let alone want us spending every single weekend together.
He may want to break free and strike out on his own. And that's fine. If that's the way he wants to fly, I'm OK (ish) with that.
But for now he wants us; wants us to enjoy his joy with him and I can't think of anything I'd rather do than give him this time we have together freely.

The Gallery: Week 30

Hello and welcome to week 30 of The Gallery.

Tomorrow I will be flying to Ireland to laugh like a drain in the company of five women who I have met through blogging and have the very good fortune to call friends.

We've featured the men in our lives here on The Gallery before but now it's the turn of the girlies.
So this week's theme is: Here come the girls.
Show me the women in your life: Mums, aunts, grandmas, daughters, sisters, nieces, friends.

As always, come back on Wednesday to add your link, visit as many others as you can, say hi, discover new people, welcome them in when they discover you.
Appreciate the wonderful words and photos that are opening themselves up to you.
The link stays open until the following Tuesday, so don't worry if you don't manage to post on Wednesday.

So what are you waiting for, get clicking!

The Gallery
If you're new to The Gallery, here's the brief: I will give you a prompt, an idea, a notion and you go out and take a photograph using that prompt. Or just use a photo you already have.
The prompt could be one word, an object, an idea, a phrase, anything, and you have to post a picture which you feel represents that prompt.
Post it on your blog and write about it.
That's it.

It's not about taking technically brilliant photos - although if you do, I'd love to see them too. It's about having a passion for pictures; any photos, all photos whether you took it with your all singing all dancing SLR or snapped it on your camera phone.
You don't even have to be a blogger to take part - just send me your photo and I will publish it on my blog for you. You don't even have to include your name if you prefer.

When you've published it, come back on Wednesday and via a groovy widget thing you can add a link to your post and share it with everyone. The link remains open for a week.
Visit others, comment if you like them or feel inspired by them. Just go out and encourage and support amateur photographers out there.
The more support you give, the more you will get back.

And if you want to add a pukka linkable Gallery button to your blog (instead of the amateurish one I've been using!) the code is just under The Gallery picture in the right hand column on this blog.
Come back on Wednesday and join in. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

If you want to make sure you don't miss any prompts or entries in future, make sure you subscribe to my RSS or email feed.
Go on, clicky click away, you know you want to ...
